The Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) has become one of the European Union’s most effective environmental instruments, significantly advancing efforts to reduce single-use plastic waste and marine litter. At a time when plastic pollution continues to threaten ecosystems, biodiversity and human health, the Directive has provided regulatory clarity and a strong signal that unnecessary single-use plastics must be phased out.

The purpose of the Circular Economy Act is to accelerate the EU’s transition to a more circular economy and increase its economic security, resilience, competitiveness and decarbonisation.
With the Act due for adoption in 2026, the European Commission launched a consultation and call for evidence in August 2025, to which the Natural Polymers Group submitted its response on 5 November 2026.

The Natural Polymers Group has produced a white paper exploring how the UN Global Plastics Treaty can enable credible, safe and scalable substitutes to avoid plastics. The Treaty is a historic opportunity not just to regulate plastic - but to catalyse the transition away from it.

TDi's role will be to help the NPG achieve its vision of advancing natural polymers as the mainstream subsitute to plastic across a broad range of everyday applications. TDi will help steer the Secretariat's discussions on reaching group advocacy goals within the waste hierarchy and broader circular economy frameworks.
