PROVIDE BOLD POLICIES ON PLASTIC TO INCENTIVISE CHANGE

We need bold and decisive action to tackle the plastic crisis that is harming our planet and our health.

1. Eliminate unnecessary plastics

3. Set up an intermediary specifically for natural polymers

2. Reflect the true cost of plastics

Governments need to adopt a clear definition of what constitutes avoidable plastic, and set ambitious targets and deadlines for countries to phase out the production and use of such products. This includes items that have viable alternatives, such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery and food containers.

2. Reflect the true cost of plastics

3. Set up an intermediary specifically for natural polymers

2. Reflect the true cost of plastics

Governments should implement policy measures such as EPR systems, taxes and levies that make disposable and avoidable plastics more expensive than sustainable options. This will encourage manufacturers and consumers to choose products that are better for the environment and reduce plastic waste. For example, the Dutch government introduced a tax on disposable plastic cups and food packaging for takeaway and delivery in 2023.

3. Set up an intermediary specifically for natural polymers

3. Set up an intermediary specifically for natural polymers

3. Set up an intermediary specifically for natural polymers

An intermediary that can conduct research, engage with industry and distribute funding for innovation and infrastructure/equipment. The funding for this organisation could come from taxes or levies on the production or consumption of synthetic polymers, as a form of preventative remediation or environmental reparations.
